About the Film

About

Vil·i·fy (ˈvɪl əˌfaɪ)  tr.v. vil·i·fied

1. to attack the reputation (of a person or thing)

2. To defame; slander, revile, debase, degrade.

Vilified is a low-budget, independent feature film that tells the story of Hassan, a 17-year-old Pakistani Muslim American, and his mom, Feroza. After moving to a suburban town in Pennsylvania, Hassan and Feroza are faced with challenges in a hostile climate of racism and Islamophobia, particularly in high school and the workplace. As they realize that these forces not only threaten their safety and well-being, but also their unity as a family, they come across friends and allies who share similar experiences.

Vilified explores the complex intersections of race, gender, class, religion, and other aspects of social identity, and highlights on stories that are too often marginalized or excluded by mainstream media. The film addresses both interpersonal and structural forms of oppression and their impact on Muslims and people of color.

Written, produced, and directed by Jehanzeb Dar, and shot in Philadelphia and surrounding areas, Vilified is an empowering and uplifting story about friendship, solidarity, perserverance, and family.

The film is currently in post-production and will be submitted to film festivals upon completion. If you have any questions about screening information or general inquiries about the film, feel free to contact us.
